if they had lived can you imagine as harry nears eleven his dad and uncles start to let slip bits of the mischief they got up to and lily starts to drop the bits of mischief she got up to, you know, because she wasn’t a saint either but it’s the marauders and a losing battle and they pull out all the stops: the map they wax poetic about the map like she’s a “bloody ex girlfiend”, lily says. harry asks, well can i have it then, dad? and they get misty eyed and james sadly informs him that it was taken by filch and to blame his uncle padfoot for squandering part of his inheritance as a marauder’s son for a ravenclaw with ni— but then lily clears her throat and the topic gets changed. james gives him the cloak as compensation. harry breaks into filch’s office third year in an attempt to get the map because how bloody cool would that be and he nearly gets caught and he’s retelling the tale to ron in the common room but fred and george are listening in and their jaws drop and they interject with: harry, did you just say that your dad had a magical map of hogwarts? harry gets all flustered and defensive and fred says”does the name ‘prongs’ mean anything to you and he’s like “yeah, that’s my dad, why?” and they completely freak out because harry is prongs’s son. it kills them to do it, but it rightfully belongs to harry. they don’t just give it away, though, they give it to him blank and he knows how to work it and their best/worst fears are confirmed and they give it to him. james is beside himself w/ joy when he opens it on christmas morning.
