in terms of flora and fauna Nigeria is well endowed with about 60% of the land fertile for cultivation. Over 75% of our population depend on one form of agriculture or the other for livelihood sustenance (farming, fishing, hunting, livestock, forestry, research, extension, agric education, agricbusiness/agro dealers, manufactuerers, transporters, national agric research systems etc), it accounts for less than 45% GDP and less that 9% of government annual earnings. Most of the people engaged in agriculture are rural people many of whom are poor vulnerable women trapped in the cycle of poverty, using old implements, lacking access to information, free land ownership, modern technology and infrastructure, storage systems, markets, and microfinance; making a pittance as earnings, usually living on less than $5 a day, yet they produce the bulk of the food we eat daily. By virtue of the sheer size Agriculture is one sector that has the potential to cut poverty, eradicate hunger, generate incomes, transform lives and revitalize the economy but why is it the most neglected sector in the economy?
