its hard to dance with a devil on your back its funny this metaphor generated a discussion between me and the boy a couple of weeks ago. i told him i really loved the lyric and he wanted to know why. we talked all about what devils might be on someones back, both internal and external. this lyric is really striking me in connection with robin williams for some reason. i have seen people post sadness and shock and anger and judgement and pretty much the entire range of human emotions and reactions. if you think mental illness isnt real, you just havent been close to it. its as simple as that. its like explaining what its like to have a kid to someone who doesnt have a kid. you just fall short with the words and give up because they are never going to understand it fully, no matter how hard you try to explain. lets be honest and stay away from politics for a minute....the shootings in this country over the last 20 years have not been because of the guns. they have been in most cases traced back to unchecked, untreated, mistreated, and generally ignored glaring cases of mental illness. robin williams.... what if you found out that how funny someone is outwardly is inversely proportionate to how depressed and sad they are inwardly? devils come in many forms. i believe we are all broken, and trying to fix ourselves enough to survive. some of us never learn how. some of us arent able to learn how because we are sick. not like a cold. more like a miswiring somewhere important upstairs. we cant help it any more than someone could help having a runny nose...
