lease Help Defeat Arizona Voucher Expansion HB 2291 and companion Senate billl SB1236 and tell senators to vote NO on SB1100, which take the decision re how taxpayer-funded public buildings (that the state is closing) are to be used out of the hands of the voter-elected school board and parents and open up their being given to to for-profit private and charter schools. HB2291 was retained in House Committee of the Whole (COW). This bill would significantly expand the pool of students eligible for the state’s private voucher program, the so-called “empowerment scholarships” to nearly 60% of the student population. The bill’s sponsor, Rep. Lesko, is expected to introduce an amendment that would make these private school vouchers available to all Title I students – nearly 75% of Arizona students. Complete privatization of the states local controlled public-school system would just a matter of time (perhaps several years or less). It is atrocious that the state would attempt to so radically change our education system without some public discussion or a cost analysis showing how much such a privatized system will cost taxpayers.
