my home parish of St Thomas’ in San Francisco was a man, now - TopicsExpress

my home parish of St Thomas’ in San Francisco was a man, now gone to God, named William Rusher. Bill was one of the smartest men I have ever known. He was a staunch conservative, but his political views are not why I am mentioning him here. Bill and several other bright young men saw that the conservative movement of the 1950’s and early sixties had no unified voice and no clear direction. Often, the rhetoric tossed about was inaccurate. Sometimes it was simply embarrassing – it sounds a bit like the contemporary Anglican Church, doesn’t it. Bill and his fellows understood that if the conservative movement was ever going to take hold, it needed strong, educated and articulate leaders who could communicate their ideas, and the reasoning behind those ideas, in a way that people could understand, and in understanding, could engage in meaningful debate. The question was how to accomplish this. Someone had to take the lead and take the risks. Bill asked his friends, If not us, then who? This is the question I want to place before us today: If not us, then who? One of the challenges facing all churches is declining membership.
