official NAMI Mass logo July 22, 2014 FEATURE NAMI Dorchester/Mattapan/Roxbury Celebration of National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month on July 17th, 2014 In recognition of July as the National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month and in honor of Bebe Moore Campbell, NAMI Dorchester/Mattapan/Roxbury organized an event at the Grove Hall Library, located in a predominantly African American neighborhood in Boston on Thursday, July 17, 2014. The event was an educational one to eliminate the sense of stigma of mental illness and disparities in treatment and service delivery. There were over 50 people in attendance -- most from the African American community. Also present were Steven Rosenfeld, President of NAMI Massachusetts, Mary Giliberti, Executive Director of NAMI National, Attorney Michael Curry, President of the Boston Branch NAACP and the keynote speaker, and psychiatrist, Dr. Mathieu Bermingham, a NAMI Massachusetts Board member. Their message was a unifying one, embracing diversity, promoting knowledge of NAMI and its educational and support programs, grassroots advocacy and fighting stigma and discrimination. Mr. Currys speech brought forth the everyday challenges of the inner-city African American and the persistently defeating impact of racism which often adds to the constant stresses blacks and other ethnic minorities overwhelmingly face and which create and exacerbate severe mental health issues and drug addiction among this population. Comm of MA SealPartners Healthcare System, Inc., et al., Superior Court Civil Action No. 14-2033-BLS My discussions with mental health providers suggest that there is actually a consensus on the underlying problems that prompt my letter. Specifically, I believe every hospital system affected by this proposed settlement, including Partners, agrees that the adequacy of inpatient behavioral health beds (also referred to herein as psychiatric beds) is a matter of serious concern. That is why it is so regrettable that in the entire settlement document, there is no reference to the problem, much less an attempt to alleviate legitimate concerns of both providers and patients.
