pg 33 IV THE MYSTERY OF LIFE AND FORM A custom is largely ruled by natures laws if we understand it aright and conventions remain when progression, evolution or education have made that custom, now conventionalised, obsolete, useless and superfluous. We are inclined on the one hand to throw away customs that belong to one country for a reason and forget to seek for that reason. The fact of ignoring the custom gives a licence for action which may bring much evil consequence. You cannot ignore the custom of another, it does not suit the race nor the climate nor the conditions. People are happily too diverse and Gods manifestations in each nation too manifold for us to expect uniformity, we are not of one form so we should not seek for uniformity anywhere, unity in diversity is what we must aim at; a true international spirit can grow out of diversity alone. He has been compared to an Ocean, whose billows are universes, whose spray is myriad forms; to a Fire, whence millions of sparks proceed, and every spark a Spirit; to a Tree, bearing innumerable leaves and every leaf a life. Where then do we find uniformity? Yet there are those who, unable to grasp His Life in many forms, would try to impose uniformity in customs, in dress, in fashion, in religion.
