question of the day: what is ISIS? no, not the ancient egyptian goddess. it is the islamic state of iraq and sham. sham is arabic for damascus, also one of the three provinces in the region from ottoman times besides aleppo and beirut. they are fighting for a sunni arab theocratic state in parts of iraq and syria. like al nusra they are part of the free syrian army. nothing is free about that unholy alliance apart from the free arms they receive from USA and UK. as we speak violence is escalating on both sides of the turkish-syrian border. the turkish government is supporting the islamists in syria against the secular kurds. there is no happy ending to this story.
