I sent the following letter to my senator: Hi Senator Harr, Im writing to you today to let you know that I would like you to support LB 1011, a bill to allow Nebraska farmers to grow industrial-grade hemp for commercial use, and LB 1102, a bill which would allow the use of cannibidiol oil for medicinal purposes with a doctors approval. Industrial hemp has a wide variety of industrial uses including textiles, construction materials, hempseed oil which is a more efficient source of renewable energy than corn or soybean ethanol, food products, and much more. Congress is currently considering allowing those states where growing industrial hemp is legal at the state level to grow it without federal interference. (washingtontimes/news/2014/jan/28/congress-takes-first-step-legalize-industrial-hemp/) The current market for hemp products in the US is about 500 million dollars per year. For an agricultural economy like Nebraskas, thats a lot of business that were potentially passing up and handing to states like Kentucky and Colorado. Cannibidiol oil has a wide variety of medicinal uses, including treatment for seizure disorders, Parkinsons disease, and multiple forms of cancer. Unlike marijuana, cannibidiol oil does not have any psychoactive effects. It doesnt produce a high or impair a persons motor skills or judgment. Studies have shown that it inhibits the growth of cancer cells, and is more successful at fighting multiple forms of cancer than radiation or chemotherapy. Regardless of your views on marijuana for personal or medical use, cannibidiol oil does not contain THC, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, and should be available for sick people whose doctors determine that they would benefit from using it. Please let me know that you support LB 1011 and LB 1102 and will be voting for them this session. Thanks! Paul Tripp
