#semperlove - Thursday, November 14: The Empty CD Case I enjoy shopping at thrift shops. Two years ago, I bought a $98.50 Brooks Brothers shirt for $3.99. The tags were still attached, and I was thrilled with my treasure. My passion, however, is looking for golf equipment, record albums, CDs, and books. I’m very selective, and have learned to make sure that CD cases and album jackets are not empty. In past years, I’ve purchased items - and not only from thrift stores - that were either missing or incomplete. One was a CD. I was so excited to find it that I never thought to look inside the plastic case. After this and several other similar mishaps, I wised up and began checking before leaving a store to ensure that I wouldn’t be disappointed when I arrived home. An empty box, regardless of how attractive it is, does not equate to a fine gift. This observation is also true with people. A golfer with the latest and most expensive equipment is not assured of playing well. Living in a million-dollar mansion does not guarantee happiness. Neither will a handsome/beautiful person who is physically attractive necessarily be a good friend or partner. Looks can deceive. Even as the contents of a gift box are what’s really important so, too, is one’s character. I care more about who someone is than how he or she appears on the outside. In rare cases, both beauty and character can be found in the same person. How fortunate I am to have found this in Bonnie, as well as in the majority of my friends and acquaintances. My thrift store treasures pale in comparison to these. Blessings and peace, De Hillyer, battalion chaplain, Semper Fidelis Health & Wellness
