Thisis just asmall description extracted from the era of all timeTelugu sensationto pay the tributes.Born in Nimmakuru, a small village inGudivada taluk on May 28, 1923, NTR had his earlyeducation from atutor, Valluru Subba Rao, in his native village. Hisparents,Venkataramamma and Laxmaiah, gave him inadoption to the lattersbrother, Ramaiah and his wife Chandramma, whowere issueless. Hestudied up to Classs V in his village as there was nofurther educationthere, Ramaiah and his wife took their adopted son toVijayawada andgot him admitted into Class VI in the municipalschool. He passed thematriculation examination in 1940 and joined the SRRand CVR College inVijayawada. While doing his Intermediate course, hesupplemented thefamily income by supplying milk to hotels inVijayawada on his bicycle.NTR-a mentor multifacetedComing from an ordinary peasant family in a remotevillage in Krishnadistrict, he worked his way to the top with his hardwork and strongdetermination to reach the goal, come what may. That was Nandamuri Taraka. Rama Rao, the hero ofthe masses in his reel life, who later became their hero in real life by unseatingthe nearlycentury old and well entrenched Congress, andforming the first evernon-Congress Government in the State. As a stage performerAt the end of the first year, the students decided tostage a play writtenby `Kavi Samrat Viswanadha Satyanarayana, thewell-known Telugu poetand writer and the head of the Telugu department ofthe college. The play, `Rachamalluni Dautyam, had a strongheroines character andgirls did not take part in stage activities in thosedays.Satyanarayana ordered Rama Rao to don the robe ofthe heroine, and thelatter took it up, though unwillingly. That was his first role on the stage and it got him thefirst prize and also kindled hisinterest in histrionics. During the college anniversarycelebrationsthe next year, he played the role of Salim in the play`Anarkali andagain bagged the first prize.Basava Taraka Rama RaoIn May 1942, when he was 20, Rama Rao marriedBasava Tarakam, the daughter of his maternal uncle. The marriage came in the way of his studies and hefailed twice in the Intermediate examination. Unableto stand theteasing by his friends, he made a determined effortand finally passed the examination. He joined the Andhra Christian College atGuntur for the Bachelor of Arts course in 1945. Heformed an amateurdrama group, `National Art Theatre, with the help ofhis friends. Thegroup used to stage plays to raise funds for noblecauses. The first offer to join films came Rama Raos way, when he was still incollege. The famous Telugu director, C. Pullaiah, offered him a role inhis film Keelu Gurram. He, however, turned downthe offer, as hefirst wanted to complete his degree course.A well-wisher introduced him to the establisheddirector, L.V. Prasad, who after ascreen test in Madras, offered him a small role in hisfilm `ManaDesam. Rama Rao, who wanted to take up acting asa full-time careerwas looking for the role of a hero rejected the offer. As Sub-RegistrarIn the meantime, he appeared for the Madras ServiceCommission examinationfor sub-registrarspost. Of the 1,100 candidates whotook the test, seven were selected and he was one of them. Hetook up the job inOctober 1947 for a salary of Rs.120. On the very firstday of reportingfor duty, he was shocked to see the staff takingbribes and wasdisillusioned.Luckily for him, B.A. Subba Rao, who was makinghis directorial debut, `Palleturi Pilla, saw Rama Raosphotograph inL.V. Prasads album and decided that he was theright man for theheros role in his film. He was offered Rs.1,116 forthe heros roleand he accepted the offer and went back home aftersigning an agreement. He resigned the sub-registrarsjob, three weeksafter he took it up andwent back to Madras to launch himself in the screencareer. He nowaccepted the role of a police sub- inspector inPrasads Mana Desam, which was his first film.A new genre of Telugu Cinema- filled with NTR feverHe had an obsession for trying to be realistic in hisfilms. In his first film as hero in `Palleturi Pilla, RamaRao refused the services of a duplicate to do therisky bullfight scene, much against the wishes of thedirector. After some time, he lost grip on the nooseand the enraged bull lifted him, swung him aroundand threw him to the ground. He suffered a wristfracture and was hospitalised for several weeks. Thebullfight contributed to the success of the film and itbecame amega hit, running for 100 days at seven theatres inAndhra region. It was the folklore, `Patala Bhairavi, which was theturning point in his career. The first godly role heplayed was that of Lord Krishna in `Maya Bazaar. However, it was his role in `Sri VenkateswaraMahatyam, released in 1960 that gave him a newidentity. The deification of RamaRao began and his residence in Madras became ashrine for pilgrims, whowould visit him after a trip to Tirupati. NTR fans usedto wait in longqueues outside his house for a darshan of their`living-god. They usedto apprise him of their problems back home in theirvillages and helistened to them patiently before rushing to the studioin the morning.Though there is little commentary available, analystsbelieve that the Telugufilm industry produced some of the best mythologicalmovies in theentire India movie making history, while the Tamiland Hindi movieindustry produced better socially oriented films.NTR was naturally talented and extremely disciplinedwith various aspects ofacting like preparation, punctuality, dialogue deliveryetc. The singlemost important factor that makes him a great actorwas his ability todeliver dialogues, which were extremely lengthy thatwere originalverses from Ramayana and Mahabharatha, with afervour and command veryfew unlike his contemporaries, with certainexceptions like S. V. RangaRao. This despite the fact that he generally used toplay multipleroles in the same movie, hence increasing theamount of the dialoguesand preparation required, which only increased hisdetermination. The greatness of Rama rao was that he was veryversatile. Down south, inTamilnadu, Shivaji Ganesan was much more knownfor his acting skill andtalent. Whereas MGR was much more known for hiscommercial movies. NTRstruck a balance between both kinds of cinema. Heused to perform rolesin mythological movies like those only Shivaji couldperform and evendo commercial Janapadham(where the adventurousprince saves thedamsel in distress)films which were MGRs forte. Buthe did not get asmany awards from the government of India becauseof his conflict withthe central government on his political ideas. He wasneglected. The most notable movies acted by NTR inmythological characters areMaya Bazaar (Sri
