some of mcmurdos blogs i have,nt posted yet////churchy Comings And Goings Posted on July 12, 2013 by billmcmurdo Craig Mather has been appointed as the permanent CEO of Rangers Football Club. I wish him well, even although I have been involved representing someone else who was interested in the position. This person was very high profile in football, with impeccable credentials and arguably one of the best track records in world football. Mather clearly impressed his fellow directors during his time as interim CEO and he has been given the task of leading Rangers back to the club’s rightful position at the top of Scottish football and being a competitive force on the European stage. One of the things he will have to do is put to rest the ghost of Charles Green. Many still compare him to Green but this is unfair. Mather is his own man and it looks like he will be less outspoken than his predecessor. This is not a flaw in the man; it means he will do things his way. Bluenoses should be prepared to get behind the new CEO and give him the opportunity to show his mettle. I don’t think he lacks the enthusiasm or ambition in the role and he can pick up experience along the way. Who knows? He may provide the leadership the club desperately needs at this time. Genuine supporters of the club will surely hope so. ——————– The departure of Victor Wanyama may be great news for the bean-counters at Celtic Park but will not please many fans. Wanyama’s exit means that Celtic are a weakened side and the task is to replace the big Kenyan with someone of equal ability – not an easy task. Celtic’s Champions League aspirations will not be helped by this transfer and it highlights the downside of the club’s Buy Low, Sell High policy. This policy means that the team could go through up and down periods and is dependent on finding players who fit the concept. Over the next couple of seasons the Celtic squad is likely to get weaker while that of arch-rivals Rangers should get stronger. This, coupled with the inability to fill the stadium for “meaningless” fixtures, is the real story behind the Wanyama transfer. Celtic’s reliance on Champions League participation means that failure to reach the tournament proper will deflate both club and fans before the season begins in earnest. Of course, that is the opinion of a confirmed bluenose so I don’t expect too many Celtic fans to agree with me. Nonetheless, the general trend is downward because of the sale of Wanyama, unless a replacement is found of the same ability.
