In an executive order, Manila Mayor Erap Estrada ordered the suspension of classes and work in government offices except for certain units since “millions of people from all over the world are expected to come to Manila during the Papal Visit.” The order covers both private and public schools. It will be up to the discretion of private offices whether to suspend work or not, according to the order. A bulk of the Pope’s activities in the Philippines will happen in the city of Manila. Upon his arrival he will be brought by a motorcade to the Apostolic Nunciature, or the Vatican Embassy, along Taft Avenue. His second day in the country includes a welcome ceremony in Malacañang, which is also in Manila. Francis’ second to the last day, January 18, will also be spent mostly in the city. The Pope is scheduled to meet leaders of various religions at the University of Santo Tomas in Manila, followed by a meeting with the youth on the same campus.
