the essence of science is the formation of an idea based on an observation, testing that idea through rigorous peer review, and only then, if it holds up to scrutiny, holding it as a theory. Thats the definition of a scientific theory, a hypothesis that has withstood peer review and from which accurate predictions have been made. Religion, on the other hand, is the ignorance of observation so that faith can be preserved. religious follows hold to an idea and are, for the most part, dismissive of anything that contradicts that belief. Scientific ideas are formed from, and reinforced by, observation and quantitative evidence that can be repeated multiple times, Religious ideas are formed from an ideology and rigorously enforced regardless of any new evidence that may arise.
