the three main Fitan (great trials) before coming of al-mahdi : Al-Ahlaas (Intense fleeing & war that will leave the muslims completely destitute and will be long-lasting), followed by the trial of Al-Asarraa (happiness caused by a life of luxury & ease that will lead to forgetfulness of Allah and indulgence in sins), this fitna of happiness will be brought about by a man claiming to be from the prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم (as he is from his lineage) but he is not from him صلى الله عليه وسلم(as his deeds are in contradiction to the sunnah)....... then the muslims will pledge allegience to a man who is unfit for leadership but will be given it due to the confusion and lack of imam/leadership...this will be followed by the huge tribulation ad-duhaima (great long-lasting darkness) which will be in the form of trials that every muslim will be touched by either in the form of loss of life or wealth or destruction of preperty, etc, etc.... trials that will strengthen the steadfastness of true believers and bring out the true face of hyppocrites until the ppl divide clearly into two camps: a camp of belief in which there is no hyppocricy (not in beliefs nor in actions) and a camp of hyppocricy in which there is no belief ( nor in aqeeda nor in action) ...this is when the true khalifa (mahdi) will appear to lead the camp of believers against the camp of hyppocrites which will be lead by the dajjaal.......... ((Abdallah ibn Umar (ru) said "We were sitting with the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) and he mentioned tribulations, speaking at length about them, until he mentioned Fitnat Al-Ahlaas (a tribulation which will be lengthy and intense). Someone asked, "Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم), what is Fitnat Al-Ahlaas?" He صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said, "People will flee losing their property and families. Then Fitnat Al-Sarra (a tribulation caused by luxury and a life of ease) will come which will be caused by a man from among my family (Ahl al Bayt), who will claim that he is of me but he will not be of me, for my friends are the pious. Then the people will unite under a man like a hip bone over a rib (unstable). Then the huge tribulation will come, which will not leave anyone of this Ummah without giving him a slap. When it is said that it is over, it will be extended, and a man will be a believer in the morning and a disbeliever in the evening, until the people are split into two camps: a camp of faith in which there will be no hypocrisy and a camp of hypocrisy in which there will be no faith. When that happens, expect the Dajjal on that day or the next". (Abu Dawood. Classified as Sahih by Al-Albani in Al-Silsilah al Saheehah, # 972).
