this one is for you, babe it was a good Sunday me and my brother, Nick who recently moved in with me were working things out just fine it was good to have him back in my life Im sure he felt the same way we had lost track of each other lost track of ourselves, really we went downtown in the early afternoon first, to East Harlem to the Giglio feast dedicated to Saint Anthony a bunch of guys in white caps with yellow neckerchiefs around their necks lifted the statue of Saint Anthony and the platform on which he stood to the strains of Italian folk songs they walked, they swayed, they danced in this, their labor of love that goes back over a hundred years to its origin in the old county, Italy right here in the heart of the neighborhood our neighborhood where we were born and raised we strolled around a bit saying hello to old friends running it down and catching up hows the wife and kids? when we were done down east we walked to West Harlem to take in a Stevie Wonder tribute the crowd was as lovely as it was diverse we never ventured west of Third Avenue in the old days for fear of bodily harm blacks and Puerto Ricans didnt come east of third either it wasnt the best way to live but we all adapted to the unwritten laws its just the way it was not saying it was right at all just the way we lived walking the worn highway of tradition until we grew out of it and learned to live and love inside a larger sphere the world is a big place this concert was a world apart from the days of old young and old, babies and seniors black and white dancing their hearts out if you were there, darling, youd be leading us all in one dance or another I was always the wallflower sitting it out except for the slow songs for fear of embarrassment not last night though I was a fool, a dancing fool not caring what I looked like or who saw a couple of times I glanced up to the heavens missing you and thinking this one is for you, babe this one is for you .. charlie giardino 8/12/13
