#timesensitive-- hoping to bring more awareness, council vote is this monday. TxDOT has given the City of Austin an opportunity to buy the land across Bull Creek Road. If the city does not exercise that option it will be sold to the private developer who makes the highest bid. I live in the neighborhood across from this land and our association believes we will be better able to influence the direction the development takes with the city. If you agree, please use this web page austintexas.gov/mail/all-council-members to send a message to the city council. (We are a small neighborhood greatly impacted by the area, so the more advocacy around this the better). Subject: Acquire TxDOT Land at Bull Creek ...or whatever text you feel appropriate: below is what I sent: Please support purchase by the city of the 75 acres of state property at W. 45th St. and Bull Creek Rd. that TxDOT has offered for sale. It’s a great deal for our city, and the many benefits will more than justify the cost. This investment in the future will preserve precious open space in the central city in an area now under-served by parks. It will allow extension of the Shoal Creek Trail and mitigation of potential flooding downstream as well as protect a beautiful natural area full of wildflowers and heritage trees. Careful development of portions of the property ultimately could allow the city to recoup much of the purchase cost. As with the Mueller development, the city, in partnership with the nearby neighborhoods, would have a unique opportunity to shape responsible development at the site compatible with the surrounding area, including affordable housing. The alternative is that TxDOT will sell the land to the highest private bidder, driving up the purchase price so high that the winning bidder would have to develop the property much more intensively in order to make a profit. By acting now, this council can leave a lasting legacy for our city that will benefit future generations of Austinites for years to come.
