well today Ive been watching youtube clips (as i often do ) about guitarists , how they play , what they use , how they developed their style etc and it got me thinking about the army of people who criticise technically gifted players for their ability . It seems that the people who arent of a standard to take part in the guitar olympics are often of the opinion that its a bad thing , that the people who are capable are just showing off , that the lead break is simply mindless noodling that doesnt serve a purpose . To be honest Im a bit sick of it . the guitarists that these people criticise do also serve the song while theyre not noodling the difference is is that they are way more capable and take the songs they play to so many different places because of their technical capabilities. One group of guitarists got singled out in particular i.e. the solo guitarists which I suppose they mean the steve Vais and Joe satrianis of this world . well the view I take is that a lot of the time they simple replace the vocal with guitar and still use melody and feel in their songs . A lot of the time the people who go on a mission say well i could do all that stuff if I really wanted to , well in that case please just for once do it and show us all how its done , I cant wait to hear it . One comment I found particularly annoying was made my U2 guitarist The Edge . talking about the guitar olympics he said that its just not that interesting and hes the kind of player who supports the song . well to me and a lot of other people it IS that interesting and its what got us into playing guitar . so who are you ( a strum along player ) to criticise the impact these gunslinger guitarists have made on millions of people ? I would rather listen to them( players who devoted countless hour to perfecting their art ) than a player of limited ability who has to rely of 2 fridges of effects that he doesnt even program himself as musical salt for his otherwise bland playing . To me in the end well thats just not that interesting .
