when tchaikovsky, inspired by vaguely teutonic legends & the full panoply of post-wagnerian orchestration, clad fairy tales in his sumptuous scores, the largely apathetic & snobbish public of tsarist russia was unprepared for such ambitious designs which demanded their full attention. ~from kirsteins introduction to the nutcracker. first performed in 1892 (a year before tchaikovskys death), it wasnt performed in the west (london) until 1934, made it san francisco in 1944, and not until 1964 did it finally make it to the new york city ballet company at lincoln center where it still enjoys its annual 5-week holiday season run. lets celebrate its eventual, lavish, colourful success with a painting, shall we? .... stay tuned! #faerietalefeet #nutcracker #ballet
