why are our varsities lagging behind the best in the world? If we know the reasons, we can plug the loopholes. Here are the 12 reasons: 1 . Research and development in India is absolutely pathetic. Except some commercial incubation centres, none of our varsities can boast of a world class R&D centre. Even after spending arou nd Rs 70,000 crore every year on higher education, our R&D spend is very poor. 2. The quality of our faculty needs to be improved. Of course, there are some reputed teachers, but a majority at the bottom of the pyramid is under qualified. Scarcity of quality faculty is a challenge to many institutions in our country. 3 . Poor quality of faculty training. The amount which we are spending on university teachers’ training is abysmal. 4 . Work atmosphere on our varsity campuses is mostly un-academic. Most of the universities have become hunting grounds for placements, instead of knowledge centres. The ambience on the campuses should change to strive for excellence. 5 . Relationship between universities and society in general and industry in particular is skewed. There should be live and continuous communication links. 6. The administration of universities too is flawed. Right from the appointments to the University Grants Commission to the vice-chancellor posts in around 550 universities are highly politi cized. Caste, creed, money and nepotism are playing a role in the administration. A corrupt VC who bought his job will only think of recovering his investment (bribe), but will never focus on quality education. 7 . Our regulatory mechanism is still primitive; it needs to be improved urgently. 8 . There are very few international level journals to promote research. 9 . Infrastructure of our varsities is inadequate. 10 . There is no competition among different varsities within India. 11 . Scholarships are too meagre to promote excellenceand 12 . Lack of supportive environment from school levels. Hope HRD Minister M M Pallam Raju is listening.
