you know for all the talk about Paris in discussions of modernism, its curious that many of the artists got the hell out of there because, like NY and many other great cities, its gloomy or humid, or freezing, or stressful or whatever. Cezanne did not stay, Gauguin left and his brain never came back to it. Monet left. Matisse..etc. Where did this thing come from where artists never leave NY; barely even admit to the desire to leave. Is it when the representation of nature left the playing field? Was it when artists stopped searching for light, leaving the mind in charge, and minds need cities; thus so much of contemporary art (perhaps most of it) is a dialogue with urbanity? But really, the fixation on our cities in contemporary art isnt the outcome of french modernism, as so much of these artists ended up represinting nature or representing abstractions outside of urban centers. Being in the south of france for the first time in my life I can certainly see the appeal.
