youtube/watch?v=nHjV-FPMm_I I woke up this morning thinking about the farm. As I have stated here already, my dad was a Richmond Police Captain, and he was also a farmer. When we moved from Richmond to Greens Fork, I was crushed - taken away from friends and familiar surroundings, my dad introduced Mike and I to farm life. I have to admit it - WE HATED IT. I was 15, Mike was 16, and we were NOT cut out for farm life. We had to get up waaaaay before dawn, feed 13,000 hens, collect at least 10,000 eggs - candlestick them, clean and box them, than we had to walk over to the pole barn, feed 300 head of hogs, than the dogs, the horse and pony, care for the few rabbits and ducks we had, and finally take care of the two great Danes. We had to do al this before catching the bus to Hagerstown - if we did not finish our farm chores, we did not go to school that day. We never did fall in love with working so much as teens and smelling like,,,, well, I am a minister so I will have to leave that to your imagination, but we made friends with Hagerstown folk - kids of like-mindedness. Obviously, I was befriended by NON-Farmer kids as well, but many of my high school pals were farmers. Some of you may have watched Super bowl 2013 like I did. When Paul Harveys God made a Farmer commercial played, I have to tell ya, memories flooded my mind and tears flooded my eyes - I instantly back on the farm in Greens Fork, back at Hagerstown High, and faces of old friends played over in my mind like a movie. I saw Steve Thompson, Kenny Meyers, Frank Kelley, Greg Weiss, Craig Hetisimer, The twins, (I forget their names - not their faces), Mr. Lumpkin, and more - we shared class rooms, but we also shared stories of farm life. I remember going to Kiss, Hewey Lewis and the News, 38 Special, and the Indy truck pulls with those guys. Dad may or may not have known what he was doing when he took his boys out or town and put them into the farming community, but if he were alive today, Id tell him, God made the Farmer, and HE made him tough and gentle, polite and mannerly - HE gave him a solid work ethic and although the farmers hands may be tough and callous, his heart is tender and charitable. In the last 30 years since graduating high school, I have traveled from coast to coast including the gulf coast - to the great lakes, I have lived on the farm, in the deserts, and on the coast - I have worked at many places and done many jobs, yet I have never known anybody who works like the Farmer, NOBODY. I dont know why I woke up thinking about this and you all this morning, but I could not wait to get back on here and say howdy to you again. When I think about those days gone by, I miss you all.
