As a coach of some thirty years and a teacher of coaches for the last 15 years I know that I always learn from working with new people. Your questions, challenges or suggestions to me are as important as any ideas I share with you. The field of coaching is rapidly expanding and becoming more professional. As someone who has worked with many professional bodies in the field to help them think about the future of our work I recognise that international sharing of ideas is a key element that will build a profession. I applaud your initiative to bring international coaches to your table to share thinking. Our session is about complexity and the uncertainty that it creates for our clients and ourselves as coaches. For many, coaching proceeds through a process of defining goals and building a plan to achieve them. This approach assumes a linear relationship between cause and effect. If we understand that relationship we can help our clients achieve their goals. That is absolutely fine and for many does provide a way forward that they find helpful. But what about those situations where it is not possible to define goals early in the relationship or where there is no linear connection between cause and effect? Here we encounter ambiguity and frustration. These complex situations are the focus of our session. I hope you will find it interesting, challenging but mostly worthwhile as you build your own model of practice. Lets talk together, share together and build the profession together.
