各位朋友, 本人和另一關注朋友 ANA COSTA 一同撰寫了信函給予一些國際組織, 希望他/她們能關注澳門現時學者被打壓的情況, 這些組織分別是: 1. Institute of International Education (Hong Kong Branch) iie.org/ 2. Scholars at Risk scholarsatrisk.nyu.edu/ 3. Amnesty International https://amnesty.org.hk/web/ 稍後會發給更多相關的國際組織,目的只是希望更多人關注我們的言論自由和學術自由是不容任何勢力打壓,我們應享有和平的公民和政治自由。 信函內容如下: Dear Sir/ Madam, We are writing to you from Macau regarding cases of persecuted scholars who saw their contracts terminated without just cause (1). We would like to have your opinion and, if possible, support for the scholars affected. We believe that your organization has the credential and experience handling this type of situations. At the moment, we are dealing with two cases: Dr Bill Chou Kwok-ping from the University of Macau (2)and Pr. Eric Saudeté from the Saint Joseph University of Macau(3). On June 24, Ponto Final, a local Portuguese daily revealed that Eric Saudeté , a senior lecturer of Asian Politics at the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) was fired due to his political commentary on newspaper. And the rector’s statement (4) confirmed such a rationale. We believe that the University has obviously violated human rights on this occasion, and has violated laws such as the Basic Law, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the Labor Relations Law. Meanwhile, University of Macau disciplined Bill Chou of the Department of Public Administration, also a social activist, by a 24-day suspension from duty with salary withheld. Although the University claimed that the disciplinary actions were related to Dr. Chou’s infraction of the university’s guidelines of professional ethics, the documents provided by the university and classified confidential clearly indicated that it was Dr. Chou’s social actions and opinions in public that mattered. Furthermore, according to Dr. Chou’s legal advisor, the disciplinary action violated Macao’s administrative procedure law and the University’s internal regulations (for UMAC being a public institution). By 4 July 2014, Dr. Chou has not been informed whether his employment contract due to expire on 31 August 2014 will be renewed. During these few months, to show our discontent and concern, actions such as media exposure to both cases and petitions co-signed by docents, students and local citizens were made to assist our conviction to end persecution of scholars(5-6) in Macau. Letters and emails to the mentioned universities were also delivered. Lawmakers and non-profit organizations also made public statements to support academic freedom in Macau(7). We will keep on trying to protect our much needed academic freedom and freedom of speech until we see real improvement and positive response from the above mentioned academic institutions. We would like to reiterate that just as everyone has his right to faith, each individual has his right to express freely. Both are equally noble and must be defended. Being indifferent to social injustice is bad enough, being an accomplice of suppression would be far worse. For your reference, we are giving you a selection of related news links. Please feel free to contact us if you need more details. We are much willing to provide them to you. Thank you so much for taking time to read this. You reply would be appreciated.
