Ar-Raqqah (also spelled Rakka), is a city in north central Syria located on the north bank of the Euphrates, about 160 km east of Aleppo. In the year 18/639, the Muslim conqueror Iya? ibn Ghanm took the Christian city Kallinikos by contract. Since then, it figured in Arabic sources as ar-Raqqah, but still in Syriac sources the name of Kallinikos remained. In 20/640–1, the earliest congregational mosque in the Jazira was built in the predominantly Christian city. many companions of the Prophet Muhammad used to live in ar-Raqqah. The Battle of Siffin took place here and thus the tombs of Ammar ibn Yasir and Uwais al-Qarni are located in ar-Raqqah. Uwais Qarni, known also as Saint Uwais Qarni , also transliterated Oways b. Anis al-Qarni, Oveys Gharani and Veysel Karani) was a Muslim mystic, martyr and philosopher of Saudi Arabia who lived during the lifetime of Muhammad. Qarni converted to Islam during Muhammads lifetime. Not long after a meeting with Ali, Qarni left Qaran for Kufa, modern Iraq. He fought for Ali against Muawiyah I and was killed at the Battle of Siffin in 657. As reported by the renowned historical scholar Ibn Battuta, Uwais tomb is found in Ar-Raqqah, Syria, where he was killed in the Battle of Siffin. ----------MARTYRDOM OF KHWAJA UWAIS QARNI---------- -------- (Radiallahu Taa’la a’nhu i.e. Allah has been pleased with him).------- About the martyrdom or the death of the Khwaja there are differences of opinion amongst many of the then respectables of the religion. Most of the respectables said, the Khwaja was martyred during the war of the Maidan of Siffin at the time of the Caliphate of Hadrat Ali Karramallahu Wajhahu (Allah has glorified his face). Certain other writer described, the Khwaja died due to pain in stomach during journey. But after studying everything, the impressions that are created from those, it transpires that he got martyred in the Siffin war. So we have been compelled to accept that he got martyred in the battle of Siffin under the shade of Hadrat Ali Karramallahu Wajhahu. Now we should as usual write down the descriptions about the martyrdom or demise of the Khwaja which are available now. Sheikh Abdul Haq Muhaddis-E-Dehlavi (R.A.) has written in SHARH-E-MISHKAT, “Khwaja Uwaisee Qarni (R.A.) came under the guidance of Hadrat Ali Karramallahu Wajhahu and got martyred in the battle of Siffin fighting in favour him.” Mulla A’li Qari (R.A.) in the book, “Ma’danul Madani” has written, “Siffin is the name of a field. There in the Hizra Era 37, an war happened between Hadrat Ali Karramallahu Wajhahu and Ameer Muawia. In that war Khwaja Uwais Qarni (R.A.) got martyred. The writer of the book “Mar-atul Asrar” has written, “Khwaja Uwais Qarni (R.A.) came under the guidance of Ameerul Mu’mineen Hadrat Ali Karramallahu Wajhahu during his Caliphate and took the oath of allegiance in his hand. After that he accompanied Hadrat Ali Karramallahu Wajhahu during the war of Camel and the battle of Siffin. In the Jihad (religion war) of Siffin he got martyred. Sheikh Fariduddin Attar (R.A.) also has written, “The Khwaja got martyred in the battle of Siffin. Moulana Husain Muinuddin Maibuddi (R.A.) compiled a book named “Fawateeh-E-Sharh-E-Dewan Hadrat Ali Karramallahu Wajhahu”. In that book he has written, “In the month Zilhajj of Hizri 37 era, the battle which took place between Hadrat Ali Karramallahu Wajhahu and Muawiah, at that time Janab Khwaja Uwais Qarni was on the bank of the river Euphrates near that battle field. From that place he asked the people, “What noise is being heard?” At that time, some body said, “A war is being fought between Hadrat Ali Karramallahu Wajhahu and Ameer Muawia.” Just on hearing this word, the Khwaja arrived at the Maidan of Siffin and came under the guidance of Hadrat Ali Karramallahu Wajhahu. After that he got martyred fighting in favor of Ali (K.W.) and against Muawia. Abu Abdur Rahman has written, Khwaja Uwais Qarni arranged the soldiers in Kufa for the help of Hadrat Ali (K.W.) and started towards Syria to fight against Muawia. It is also recorded that Haram Bin Huban (R.A.) said, “Hadrat Uwais Qarni (R.A.) came near Hadrat Ali (K.W.) and conveyed salutation. Then Hadrat Ali (K.W.) told, “Have you come? Very good!” Hadrat Ali with much eagerness enquired about the condition of the Khwaja and came to know everything. After that the Khwaja remained with Ali (K.W.). At last both the respectables started towards the battle field of Siffin. And in that place he was martyred. But against all these news of the genuine reporters Ata Khurasani Ibn-E-Asakeer was telling that in a foreign land Khwaja Sahab died due to stomach pain. At that time inside the bag of the Khwaja some cloth suitable for shrouding his dead body was available. From that place two persons went to dig the grave and saw that the grave was already prepared. After that they completed the shrouding of the body with that cloth and also the funeral prayer. Then the people laying the dead body in the grave returned from the spot. After coming some distance, they again went back to see the grave, but they could not find any sign of the grave. Moulana Abdur Rahman Jami (R.A.) in his book, “Shawahedun Nabuat” as reported by Haram Ibn-E-Huban has written, Khwaja Uwais Qarni (R.A.) went to the war of Azarbaijan. There he died. The companions of the Khwaja at the time of digging the grave found a ready grave under a stone, inside that the shroud was ready. The people present there wanted to enshroud the Khwaja. But in the bag of the Khwaja such other two pieces of cloth were found, which were not made of this world. Enshrouding the Khwaja with that cloth, he was buried. Shaikh-E-Qaderil Madani also has written this. Abdullah Muhammad Ibn-e-Muslim reported that during the Caliphate of Hadrat Umar Faruq in the war of Azarbaizan Khwaja Uwais Qarni (R.A.) also was present. When they were returning, the Khwaja breathed his last. At this we desired to bury the Khwaja. But immediately we found a grave was already dug there and water also was kept. Near the grave ‘Kafan’ (shroud) and articles of fragrance were stored there. Then we washed him with that water and shrouding him with that celestial cloth buried him. But as we came at some distance, some of us said, “Let us keep a sign of the Shrine of the Khwaja.” So saying immediately on returning there no sign of the grave could be traced. The differences of opinion regarding the death of the Khwaja (R.A.) as described above, among those the martyrdom of the Khwaja is considered more reliable. Besides that it is considered natural and proper as well, that such a great personality like the best of Tabeyeen should get the fortune of having martyrdom. The difference of opinion is between: whether the demise or shahadat of the Khwaja occurred during the war of Azarbaizan during Faruqi Khilafat or during the war of Siffin during Haidari Khilafat? Though most of the elites opined that he was martyred in the battle of Siffin during the Haidari Caliphate yet it is also found more reasonable according to the arguments that he did not die in the war of Azarbaizan or at the time of returning from Azarbaizan during the Faruqi Khilafat. Because Hadrat Umar met the Khwaja during the last year of his reign. Within a year of Haram bin Huban (R.A.) got the honor of meeting with the Khwaja. Even when and at what moment Hadrat Umar succumbed to death even Haram Bin Huban (R.A.) was engaged in conversation with the Khwaja Uwais Qarni (R.A.) and heard this from the oral description of the Khwaja. Under such situation from the chronology of the historical facts, it is fully well proved that the Khwaja did not die or got martyred during the Faruqi Caliphate. So it is sure and certain that the Khwaja got martyred as a warrior fighting in favour of Hadrat Ali (K.W.) (according to some opinion), as the experienced commander of the right wing of the Army of Hadrat Ali, in the field of Siffin. Allah is the lord of all good news, Now it should be reported about the sacred shrine of the Khwaja. Regarding the sacred shrine of the Khwaja Uwais Qarni (R.A.) also the similar differences of opinion are being observed. But regarding the martyrdom of the Khwaja, what conclusion we have drawn from the chorology of historical facts and from free thinking, from that it is established that his real shrine is situated in the field of Siffin. According to certain report, the shrine of Khwaja Uwais Qarni (R.A.) is situated in Azarbaizan. Some other person also reported that the shrine of the Khwaja is also situated in Yaman. But besides the above mentioned three places, the shrine of the Khwaja has been built in some other places also. In the book entitled “Naseem-E-Chaman Fee Halat-E-Uwais-E-Qaran” it is written, the sacred shrine of Khwaja Uwais Qarni (R.A.) are situated in seven places. Among them the above three places are, of course, there, the fourth place is in Thatta in the province of Sind of West Pakistan. Even now there the truthful and faithful poor (Faqirs) are being able to earn respect for this world and for the hereafter. It is written in the mentioned book, Sultanul Arefeen Fath-e-Muhammad Chila (R.A.) in the shrine of the Khwaja in Thatta acquired unexpected prestige by remaining absorbed in meditation in that shrine as if from a drop of water a river flowed. The fifth honorable shrine of the Khwaja is situated in the town of Jabid. Most of the Hajj pilgrims visit that shrine. It is situated in the viscinity of Hajj. The sixth shrine is in Gazni and the seventh is situated in Bagdad Sharif – such has been written.* [* The disciple of this writer, Janab Azharul Islam Uwaisee became able to get the fortune of visiting the honorable shrine of Khwaja Uwais Qarni situated in Iraq. The name of the place is maqam –E- Uwais in the district of Ramadi. According to his description, surrounded by Mehdi (Hena) trees, deprived of any pomp, unostentatious, yet inspired with deep thoughts, this shrine is daily visited by the assembly of many pious personalities. – Editor] The last word is, in spite of differences of opinion, it is found to be written that the shrine of Khwaja Uwais Qarni (R.A.) is situated in seven places. The reason of the shrine in this way being situated in different places is perhaps that after the burial of the Khwaja it had not been possible to ascertain any trace of the grave. As if it is the will of Allah to keep his shrine hidden. Yet the wonderful thing is, wherever his shrine has been ascertained as a sign of his grave, it is seen that in that place the grave of his respectable mother is also situated. The mother, due to whose service he received unending kindness from the side of Allah and from the side of the Prophet (P.b.o.h and his progeny) also won endless love, as that mother was inseparable with him during his life, so also she remained inseparable after death; People preserved the memory of their tombs in the same way. Over and above that wherever it has been particularized to be the shrine of the Khwaja, miraculous and marvelous happenings are disclosed from that place. But all of those cannot be said to be his actual shrine. The writer of the book entitled “Naseen-e-Chaman Fee Halat-E- Uwais Qarni, has written hearing from any Faqir (Needless), the Khwaja went to a certain place; there, six genuine faqirs (needless) were present for service of the Khwaja. At that time the Khwaja was plunged into the meditation of Allah. In that absorbed condition his attention fell on those six Dervishes and external and internal on all conditions got the touch of it. Due to this the formation and nature of those six Dervishes were so changed that nobody could differentiate between the Khwaja and those six dervishes. After this all of them went away from that place. Thereafter where their residences were and where they were buried, the people of those places thought the dervish of their own area to be Hadrat Uwais Qarni (R.A.) and disclosed that in all those places the sacred Majar (Shrine) of the Khwaja are situated. Though such description has not been narrated by any other elite, yet it can be said that whomever Allah wants to keep hidden, regarding him, He can do whatever he wishes. For this reason such differences of opinion about the shrine of the Khwaja has been prevalent. Wherever the shrine of the Khwaja has been built, there too a stone is present. It is said that striking with that stone he broke all his teeth. Certainly the mystery of all those circumstances is well known to Allah only. Allah can hide his own nearest servants, why only here, he can do it at the date of transfer also. In such a situation in the conversation regarding the secret mysteries of the Khwaja the famous wise men also kept silent. The Poet said: Keep the lips shut, do not discharge the breath. Always remain troubled without uttering any thing. Many religious elites of the world, respectable friends of Allah (Aulia Keram) has discussed about who are called “Uwaisees”. Of course, some wants to say that without the presence of any public guide even Allah’s compassion and favor to the soul are gained by the Uwaisees. Such version has also been depicted by sheikh Muhammad Ghaos bin Hasan Sattari (R.A.) in the book Ghulzar-e-Asrar. Some elites said, “Whoever is capable of performing firmly the duties of shariat (outward injunctions of religion) in conjunction with tariqat (inwardly purified path) that very person is called Uwaisee. So, from the above discussion it is being proved that to become such a performer of above actions and to follow the required path certainly a guide for the tariqat is imperative. Of course, the name of one the states of it is I’lm-E-Ladunni (knowledge from My presence). Khwaja Uwais Qarni (R.A.) himself took the oath of allegiance (Baya’t) in the hand of Hadrat Ali (P.b.o.h) and reached the end point of Faqiri (Needlessness). The end condition of Faqiri (Needlessness) can be termed that one ‘when the true Faqir will see himself in the real sense, then he will really see Allah. When the Faqir will raise his eye sight, then only the existence of Allah will be revealed in his sight.’ The last word is, “Faqr” and “Miskinee” is such a most highly placed position of pride where every one can not reach. Khwaja Uwais Qarni (R.A.) infact gained that prestige from Sarwar-E-Kayenat Mufakhkhar – E – Moujudat Hadrat Muhammad Mustafa Ahmade Mujtaba Sallallahu A’laihi wa Alihi wa Sallam Wattaslimat and for that reason Sarwar-E-Qayenat gifted him his own khirqa (Long gown) as a token of khilafat (viceregency or Apostleship) and declared him as khairuttabeyee’n (best of the followers). It is reported from Hadrat Ibn-E-Abbas (R.A.) that Hadrat Muhammad Mustafa Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam said, “One person among my followers, whose name is Uwais Ibn-E-Abdullah Qarni, is the best of the followers (khairuttabeyeen).” Open gestures and postures of Hadrat Muhammad (P.b.o.h) could be seen in meditation by the Khwaja and the activities of the Prophet (P.b.o.h) used to be fully similar to those of the Khwaja. For that reason the Prophet (P.b.o.h) at the time of his demise expressed his last will to hand over his own khirqa to the Khwaja. So with the occurrence of bestowing the khirqa, his ability to pray for forgiveness for the followers of the Prophet (P.b.o.h) was also manifested. It is understood that under his own khirqa of the Khwaja, the khirqa of the Prophet (P.b.o.h) was existent, and from the khirqa of Uwais (R.A.) supernatural facts used to be manifested, though the Khwaja could not openly go to Madina Munawwara or could not have the chance of meeting with the Prophet (P.b.o.h). What unusual hidden mystery is present in it, will be understood after a little thinking – “Man arafallahu Faqad Arafa Kulla Lisanahu” (Whoever recognizes Allah, he surely recognizes all his language), under such a situation the Khwaja used to remain plunged into the Ummul Kitab (Mother of All celestial books) and Maktub (Whatever is written) and never disappeared from there. For that reason, the version of Sheikh Fariduddin A’ttar (R.A.) is applicable here; that, the honest character and honest behavior of the Khwaja are so numerous and of so high a level that it is impossible to finish by writing. Whatever could be made available on special investigation, selected from those are narrated here. Because the size of the book will be lengthy if all of those are written. After recording another narration from the book “Reazunnasiheen” the description has been ended. It has been written in the said book; “Certainly very many people will become kings in the heaven. Amongst them one is Khwaja Uwais Qarni (R.A.). Such prestige has been gained by the Khwaja due to his services rendered to his mother, and for maintaining excessive love with the Prophet (P.b.o.h). After writing the translation of the verses of Janab Kabir Jilani (R.A.) the life sketch of the Khwaja is being finished. I pray to the Most Gracious Allah, so that He does not disconnect worthless servant like me from the connecting rope of the Khwaja so that I can breathe my last remaining as a Uwaisee. Ameen-Ya Rabbul A’lameen. Know that the prestige of friendship is higher than love. Know the love as poison and friendship as sweetmeat. It is the river wherein exists the typhoon of Allah, he always plunges into it whoever becomes the lover. The friendship of Uwais in this world was of such kind; know it to be spotless like the sweet smelling musk. In the breath he was senseless with the fragrance of Allah and as a friend of Muhammad Mustafa (P.b.o.h) remained in passion. Whenever three pearls were lost from the Prophet, he began to break the tooth by the stone. Lo, how the eight heavens has been decorated, how the Lord of kindness brought the waves. Garland of pearl-hidden mysteries was poured. All together burst into laughter very loud. Brought out the pearls without any tie. Someone was tied to except martyrdom. Make friendship of such kind, which will not be falsified within two days. Every one will remain firm like the flower basket and will remain silent with the gown as a bud.
