Throughout his life, he was the uncrowned king of musical Germany and the idol of musical England. In 1842, Mendelssohn visited London and was unable to find accommodation to his liking in “the smoky nest,” as he called London. He wrote to his in-laws - the Benecke family – and asked if he might stay with them for the whole of his visit.
