:-) Felix Mendelssohn was considered a widely cultured and widely favoured composer. For him the sun always shone. Throughout his life, he was the uncrowned king of musical Germany and the idol of musical England. In 1842, Mendelssohn visited London and was unable to find accommodation to his liking in “the smoky nest,” as he called London. He wrote to his in-laws - the Benecke family – and asked if he might stay with them for the whole of his visit. During his stay he became very friendly with the Benecke children and composed for them, as a Christmas present, eight short pieces, of which the following six were subsequently published *Incidentally, a son of the Beneckes later married his daughter Marie *
