-RIP- R.I.P LYNWOOD SLIM In case you missed it - this was posted Monday by Hook Herrera: To all the slim family and friends and aquaintences and everybody that falls into what ever kind of soulful category linked to knowing our Slim I will now attempt to write the impossible, a short goodbye to the longest story I know, Lynwood Slim. I believe Ive been elected only because maybe Im the best speller and I can type. This morning at 7 am Lynwood Richard dDennis Duran Slim checked on out.In true Slim fashion he didnt waste a lot of time on what he needed to get done. yesterday, sunday, at noon, his life support was terminated and he was given some dope to comfort his pain and transition there on his last bed. Judy Wagar and Kid and Watson and his mother with him to the end and me on the other end of this contraption that has allowed me to share some time with slim in his room at his end. First of all we all need to recognized that no parent carries the genes to watch their child go before them. no matter the age or circumstance. Slim and his mom had an incredible bond and were such huge presences in each others lives. so, please be kind in any remarks or reaching out to his dear mother. Not to go into to much unnecessary detail, Slim after fighting for the last few years a number of obviously serious health issues, suffered a massive stroke that brought down a chain reaction of concurrent problems and it was all too much for our hero to overcome. and as I stated before, we all know Slim would have never been into going on being anything less than full on Slim. To so many, Slim was so much. and to be sure, always will be. Who ever met Slim and is gonna forget slim ? An impossible task. And not very likely. He was as traveled as can be. making friends and always diving into the local culture and customs and usually Coming back home half a scholar on where he had just been and nine times out of ten making plans to go back because they loved him so much the first time. He could show up and make any house band feel confident and get the best out of players he had never seen in his life. He was in fact a great soundman. producing and arranging and recording and writing. Slim was one of the last few consumate all around musicalcats who could do it all from both sides of the stage and on the road and in the studio. Live and on tape he was a force to be reckoned with and his music will stand the test and serve as the best testament to that. To name one is to sit here and name half the directory of whos worth a who in music that Slim has played and toured and befriended and recorded and traveled with. And each and every one has a dozen great stories for every day they spent around Slim. He was a class act of the actual old school type. he loved being as refined as he was in his musical stylings and lets face it, there arent too many left doing it like slim did. he loved the classics. As far as that goes he loved the classics in everything. Movies, documentaries, instruments, arrangements, songwriting. Spending half a day with slim always left one with an obligatory assignment to go look up half the stuff he was explaining. a self made scholar... and a self made everything in the true epitome of the phrase self made. Slim was hilarious. beyond funny. A razor with and a sandpaper sense of humor usually cut right through to the crowd Slim came from. At the same time he had the most tender side anyone could ever boast. His kindness came from deep down and would surprise so many who didnt know him. Tough love. He had a ton of that. Id say that Slim was pretty damm happy at home right before all this. He and Judy had already made a home and Slim was smiling and joking and in about a good a space as Id ever seen him. It made me happy. He always knew he was sitting on a few time bombs inside and also was ready for anything. I could go on and on and I could tell a million stories that Im sure would incriminate way too many people so I wont. I was on the Skype holding my newborn and visiting with Slims spirit and Judy and Kid and Linda and Watson and we stayed on the video for a long time laughing and telling stories so Slim could hear us. I know he did. I know thats what he would want. Of course when I hung up Im sure we all had another cry. and Im sure theres a few more cries to get out. Slim was the kind of friend that lasts a lifetime. he was as true and straight up as could be. he was a lot of things. and Im sure he was a lot of different things to a lot of different people, but what he is most of all is unforgettable. Hes the story that is gonna keep getting told and live on. Were all lucky. Lucky to have had someone like Slim get out of us what he did. To have him allow us all to feel the way we do so deeply. Its an honor to be so in touch with love for someone. In his leaving he leaves us an awakening. I can see him driving...which was scary as hell. I can see him cooking, which was just about as scary. I can see him answering the door mostly naked which was probably the scariest of all. I can hear him on the phone making me laugh so hard I cant breathe. I can see him onstage making the band smoke like a southbound train. I can see his eyes lookin at me sharing stories and all the things we had in common. I loved watching him and Queenie, his mom. they were the best team. Sitting around with Kid and wWatson and Judy and Linda laughing our asses off and we know there are so many friends who could not be there but we all know everyones heart and soul and spirit was there with him. Thats the way it was and in the end thats what we tried to send him off with and all the great feelings from everyone around the world sending their sentiments. I believe he is loved and will always be loved and I know and we all know he will be sorely missed. We decided this morning he wasnt one in a million but one in ten million. At least. Hook. or as Slim named me, The Blue NDN. which is a hilarious story well have to share one day when we meet up and have a toast for our pal Lynwood Slim. c/s
