02/08/2013 : Manik demands rollback of fuel price hike Transport Minister Manik Dey on Thursday came down heavily on the decision of further hike in petrol and diesel prices. The decision is anti-poor and anti-human, Dey said and demanded immediate rollback of the hike decision. Petrol prices were hiked for the eighth time in last nine months with this decision taken on July 31. Diesel prices were hiked 7 times in the same timeframe. Reacting to the hike decision today, Transport Minister Dey said, “The central government has become irresistibly desperate. They are not paying any heed to millions of protests and demands of rollback raised from all parts of the nation”. Petrol prices soared from Rs.69.22 to Rs. 70.06 per litre by the current decision with 5 hikes in last 60 days. Diesel prices have crossed the mark of Rs. 51 per litre. Dey expressed serious concern at the deteriorating state of affairs and said thatthe decision is likely to exercise serious impact on the transport sector and agriculture sector. “Irrigationis mostly done with the help of diesel-run pump sets in rural areas. Diesel price hike’s affect will hit the verybasic level of production which in turn will cast a cascading effect in the market”, he said.
