1 Peter 4:3-6 For the time that has passed was sufficient for you - TopicsExpress

1 Peter 4:3-6 For the time that has passed was sufficient for you to do what the non-Christians desire. You lived then in debauchery, evil desires, drunkenness, carousing, drinking bouts, and wanton idolatries. So they are astonished when you do not rush with them into the same flood of wickedness, and they vilify you. They will face a reckoning before Jesus Christ who stands ready to judge the living and the dead. Now it was for this very purpose that the gospel was preached to those who are now dead, so that though they were judged in the flesh by human standards they may live spiritually by God’s standards. Those who believe in Jesus are covered by His blood – delivered to a life that turns from all iniquity. We must strive to turn away from it, and remain in Christ. We struggle, and we most certainly stumble, but we continue to turn away and fight the good fight - because we are headed the direction of the will of God. We are able to stand firm because God equips us to do so – His Holy Spirit lives within us. Surrounded by His love and pursued always by His grace, we ought to be humbled and in deep gratitude for Jesus who paid the ultimate price to reconcile us to God. Do not feel shame for turning from sin. Doing what is right is rarely easy, and comes with a cost. In following Jesus we recognize the cost and have the courage to pay it; the courage to carry our cross as Jesus carried His. Put away the old self, and embrace the new.
