10 July 2013 Press Release: Kim Field Dance Academy The Kim Field Dance Academy’s team S.A Team: The Brat Pack flew the South African flag high at the recent 17th edition of the New Prague Dance Festival held in the Czech Republic between the 28th of June and the 5th of July 2013. The New Prague Dance Festival is an international dance competition hosted in the historic city of Prague in the Czech republic every year since 1997. The competition was conceived by the director of the New Prague Dance Festival David Pospíšil with the idea to bring together dancers from all over the world, with all different backgrounds to compete against each other on a global stage. In addition to this the festival allows people with a common interest to strike up new friendships whilst being able to earn about different cultures, all in the heart of Europe with its, old, rich historical background. S.A Team: The Brat Pack a group of 23 talented, young South African dancers competed in this prestigious international dance competition against competitors from countries including: The United states of America, Taiwan, Korea, Israel, Australia, Austria, Great Britain, Belgium, India, Turkey, Singapore, Brazil, Japan, Gibraltar, Ireland and more. Jury for the event was a panel of expert judges with impeccable international credentials as follows: Mrs. Hiroko Hirata: Member of the National Association of dance for children. Director of the Federation of Miyagi Prefecture for the Modern Dance Association and judge of the Atika National Dance Festival for the Modern Dance Company. Prof. Ivanka Kubicová: Head of the Dance Department of The Charles University of Prague (AMU), choreographer and Pedagogue of Modern dance. Prof. Roberta Meschiari: Emeritus soloist of the National Theatre Ballet in Prague. Arena di Verona, teacher at the Conservatory of Dance in Prague as well as the coordinator of the judging panel for the 2010 New Prague Dance Festival (S.A Team: The Brat Pack also won numerous awards during that festival, including 1st prize for Hip Hop/ Jazz) Mgr. Václav Janeček: Professor of Esthetics for Classical dance at The Charles University of Prague. Maitre de Ballet and Dramaturge of the National Theatre of Prague and the Laterna Magica. Mgr. Zdenĕk Prokeš: Emeritus Chief of the Ballet in Brno, Emeritus Director of the National Theatre in Brno, Artisitical Director of Ten Ballet Laterna Magica as well as Pedagogue and Choreographer. Prof. Jiří Horák: Emeritus Soloist of the National Theatre of Prague, teacher at the Conservatory of Dance in Prague and Choreographer. This year more than ever before competition and judging was fierce and our dancers had to perform at their peak in order to beat their counterparts who in many instances were professional dance troupes of dancers already skilled on degree level at university. Nevertheless S.A Team: The Brat Pack showed their mettle and managed to achieve astounding results winning no less than 7 trophies in total, a new record for any team attending the festival. Prizes awarded to the team were as follows: • 1st place in the Hip Hop/ Jazz category • BidVest Czech Republic Grand Prix for best performance • 2nd place overall for costumes • 2nd place for Pedagogy (best teacher) and • Three of a total of only 8 trophies on offer for individual awards in recognition of participants who showed exceptional talent. These trophies were awarded to the following team members: o Ntando Georgia Nyati o Yolanda Mayekiso o Vumile Mphande In addition to competing in the festival all members of S.A Team: The Brat Pack had the opportunity to attend dance workshops offered by the university of Prague in their conservatory and national theatre ballet studios. Courses in Hip-Hop and Modern dancing were offered by world renowned Professors including Prof. Tomáš Protivínský: International teacher of Hip Hop, Prof. Mui: International professor of Street Jazz, Contemporary and Modern dancing, Mgr. Daniela Lebedová: Professor of Modern and Jazz dancing and Prof. Jana Horčičková: Specialist in Hip Hop. All team members upon completion of these workshops received a certificate in recognition of training under these masters, something that will stand them in good stead in future applications to universities or art schools When taking into account the scale of the event the above achievements are truly amazing and it shows once again the high level of talent we have in South Africa and how hard work and dedication from teachers as well as pupils pay off.
