***100 Great Films of the 1980s*** #84- The Abyss (1989, James Cameron) I actually think this is a hugely underrated film. Its not amongst James Camerons very best movies, Ill accept, but it still features some excellent leading performances from Ed Harris & Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio as well as one of the most dramatic scenes in the history of science fiction cinema. The action takes place on an underwater oil rig on the edge of a giant abyss. After a submarine is submerged, a cadre of gung ho marines board the vessel so they can salvage the nuclear warheads on-board the sunken sub. During the operation, some of the crew come into contact with an alien species and the skipper of the armed forces starts to crack up and plans to attack the unknown with the salvaged nuclear arms. Theres heavy references to the Cold War and the ending turns out to be Close Encounters of the Third Kind on the ocean floor, but the movie still utilises breathtaking visual effects and was the first movie to develop the use of CGI graphics to a very realistic effect. youtube/watch?v=-fjS0ocT4FM&feature=youtube_gdata_player
