100 years ago today, Britain declared war on Germany. This event led to just under 900,000 British soldiers dying horrific deaths. Total deaths in this war were over 16 million!! Like many others, I will put aside some time today to remember them. There will be services throughout the UK. This is no day to celebrate victory or display military pomp . To do so would be obscene and an insult to those who died - the vast majority of whom had no wish to be fighting or killing other young men. This is an anniversary to be ashamed of. When we talk of their ultimate sacrifice it should never be forgotten that this was seldom self sacrifice. It was much more common that they were sacrificed by those in command.
