12-30-14 Devotions With Dave – A series on Prayer Do you have questions about how to pray, whether prayer does any good, do we really change God’s mind and such? This new series will address some of these questions. My garage door opener stopped working properly. Being an engineer, even an electronic engineer, I started reading the opener manual to find a solution. When I did not find the answers there, I called the customer support people and eventually found an answer to my problem. My preconceived notions were incorrect. I was about to go to my nearby hardware store and buy a new opener. It turned out that my opener had a lifetime warranty. A new part is on its way. How does that relate to prayer? There is a large amount of information on prayer in the Bible. If we read the whole Bible, we will get the complete truth. We have an Article of Faith that says that we believe in the plenary inspiration of the Holy Scriptures. That word plenary is a not very familiar way of saying that if you read the whole Bible, you will get the whole truth. We will try to do this in this series. Have your heard the story of the man who used an odd way of finding God’s will for him each day. He held his Bible in his hand with the binding against his palm. He would open his hand and let the Bible fall open “wherever God wanted it to open.” He would close his eyes and poke his finger to the Bible to find a verse that he should read. That day, it was Matt 27:5 “Judas hanged himself.” He thought he must have made a mistake. He tried again and this time his finger was on Luke 10:37 “Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.” He decided that he needed to find a new method. In this series, we will do our best to answer some of the questions that you may have about prayer. Feel free to leave questions as comments to this series and I will try to answer them. What was Jesus saying in John 14:14 when He said “you can ask me for anything in my name and I will do it?” I will try to answer these.
