12 years ago today, religious extremists carried out a horrible attack on the United States, resulting in the deaths of more than 3,000 people. These attacks sparked a chain of wars and reprisals that are still claiming lives today, and resulted in the deaths of more than a million people in the Middle East due to the "War on Terror". Today, I will not only offer my respect and condolences to the families of those who died that fateful day and to the families whose sons and daughters are serving in this "War"; I will also remember the day when fear and hatred compelled us to go to War against Iraq, which had nothing to do with this attack. I will remember that people roamed the streets, beating up anyone who looked to be of Arabian or Iranian descent because "they were the enemy". Hate begets hate- And this act of hatred compelled our nation to commit unspeakable acts as a result. I hope this day makes us remember our duty of conscience, our duty to demand war only as the last recourse of action- As well as our duty to serve the cause of the Enlightenment in which our Republic was truly founded.
