123rd Ambedkar Jayanti observed in Kalimpong PRADIP LOHAGUN, KALIMPONG, 3 Jul 2014: Kalimpong sun-divisional information and culture department today organised a programme in the town to observe the 123rd Ambedkar Jayanti . The programme held at Kalimpong Town Hall was presided over by Lepcha folk singer Padmashree Sonam Tshering Lepcha, while BT College principle TB Thakuri was the chief guest. The programme was also attended by Ambedkar Salig Nirman Samiti secretary Sonam T Bhutia and spokesperson Harka Pariyar along with representatives from Nagrik Samaj and large group of students. The programme started with the guests present at the function offering their respect to the late leader by offering khadas and the lighting of the ceremonial lamp. The sub-divisional Information and culture department head Paras Kumar in his welcome address informed the department was unable to observe the birth anniversary of Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar in April due to the Lok Sabha elections. TB Thakuri in his speech highlighted the contribution of Dr. Ambedkar in the formation of the new state, post independence. He said Babasaheb was not only the writer of the Indian constitution, but was also an avid social worker and a revolutionary.
