Noted Maestro Zubin Mehta has been named for the Tagore Award For Cultural Harmony for the year 2013 in recognition of his outstanding contribution to cultural harmony. 59. Shalini Singh, a Deputy Editor with The Hindu, has bagged the prestigious Prem Bhatia Award for Political Reporting-2013. She has been selected for her ‘excellent coverage of several key issues,’ particularly her ‘reporting of the telecom and Coalgate scandals.’ 60. Afghanistans first and only female governor and a humanitarian worker from the Kachin minority in Myanmar, Habiba Sarabi, is among this years recipients of the Ramon Magsaysay Award.Sarabi was honoured for helping build a functioning local government and pushing for education and womens rights in Afghanistans Bamyan province despite discrimination and poverty. 61. Indian American author Jhumpa Lahiri’s The Lowland has been listed among 13 novels longlisted for the Man Booker Prize 2013. 62. Edward Snowden, the former NSA contractor who exposed the widest US global surveillance operations, was awarded German Whistleblower Prize 2013 worth 3900 Dollars in absentia.Snowden has exposed the substantial and unsuspecting monitoring and storage of communication data by US and other western intelligence agencies, which cannot be accepted in democratic societies. 63. Four Indian-American Professors Kannan Soundararajan, Rajeev Alur, Salil P Vadhan and Senthil Todadri in fourth week of July 2013 won Simons Investigators Awards 2013. Apart from these, 9 other mathematicians, theoretical physicists and theoretical computer scientists were also selected for the Simons Investigators Awards for their cutting edge research. 64. Asian Award: Indian homeopath Mukesh Batra has been honoured with Asias most promising leader award at a recent function in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for pioneering work in healthcare, using natural medicine. 69.
