13 years ago ECOMB begun its Sustainable Community efforts by reaching out to former City of Miami Beach mayors - Kasdin, Dermer and then Bower - as well as City Commissioners, and propose the implementation of strategies that would transform Miami Beach into a greener, more sustainable community. I stated that Miami Beach had everything it needed to achieve this goal. With the support of some forward thinking commissioners, the vision slowly began to take shape. These were Commissioners Gross, Gongora and Libbin. In 2007 I created the Sustainable City Concept Proposal – a series of ideas that, as per my interpretation, the City of Miami Beach would need to address in order to transform itself into a greener community. Commissioner Gongora presented the proposal to the Mayor and Commission, and together we established the Green Ad Hoc Committee, renamed, one year later, as the Sustainability Committee! Commissioner Gross, the Committees Chairman at the time, adopted ECOMBs proposed guidelines as the guidelines for the Committee. Later on, based on these same principles and ideas, the Citys Sustainability Master Plan was created! We at ECOMB, myself in particular, are so happy and proud to see the results of our tireless efforts many years ago. There are now new energies and commitments, both in the Sustainability Committee and in City Hall, that are finally making mine and ECOMB dream a reality. Thank you Betsy Wheaton, former and present commissioners, former and present mayors, Michael DeFilipe, Dave Doebler, and many more, who believed in our vision: transforming Miami Beach into the shinny green City that it deserves – an Emerald City by the Sea.
