13 years ago today, I was sitting in my 7th grade math class when the principal came over the intercom and said that wed all be going home early because there had been an accident in Washington DC. I remember being very confused because my young and innocent mind couldnt fathom anything greater than a car accident and didnt understand how that would affect us in Baltimore. As we were being ushered out I started to worry that my uncle Lonnie could be involved since he commuted to DC at the time. My mom picked us up and tried to explain the gravity of the situation. When we got home we watched the disturbing video footage over and over - footage that would forever be imprinted in my memory as it was for millions of others alongside me. I expressed my fear and horror and asked how long we should stay inside and wait it out. My wise and courageous mother so aptly put everything in perspective for me. She told me that we would not be staying inside, or canceling activities, or hiding away in fear. These were terrorists whose twisted life goal was to incite fear in peoples hearts and if we let them do so then we were letting them win. We would pray and we would weep for those who were lost, but we would not cower away in fear and hiding. We said so many prayers that day, and will continue to do so for the families whose lives were forever changed by that horrific event. And with all that is happening in Syria today, my mothers words remain as true as they did 13years ago... We will never forget but we will never be broken.
