15 August: Happy Independence Day to the People of India and Chittagong Hill Tracts! On this day in 1947, the Indian Subcontinent became free of the nearly 200 year-long British colonial rule, and Chittagong Hill Tracts joined secular India as per the principle* of the partition of the Subcontinent, and thousands of people led by Sneha Kumar Chakma unfurled the Indian national flag at Rangamati -- the capital city of CHT -- and celebrated the Indian Independence Day. However, the undemocratic, illegal and outlandish decision of the Bengal Boundary Commission chaired by Syril Redcliff declared CHT -- a free territory until the beginning of the British colonial rule here in 1860 -- to be a part of East Pakistan (now Bangladesh)! It led the Pakistani regime to occupy CHT on 20 August 1947. Thus and then the seed of the present tragedy of the people of CHT was sawed. The United Nations came into being and all the British colonies were decolonized and made free following the World War II. However, CHT continues to suffer the trauma of the British colonial legacy till today. CHT is a colonial dispute. Its resolution is historically justified, legally valid and politically necessary for restoration of the inalienable right to self-determination of its people. And the British cant avoid their responsibility for resolving this dispute. Happy Independence Day to the people of India and CHT! *Principle: Religion -- Islamic State of Pakistan was formed with the Muslim majority areas and secular State of India was formed with the non-Muslim majority areas of the Subcontinent.
