15 year’s ago this week back in 1999, Lenny Kravitz had one of the hottest song’s. It’s a song that was originally recorded back in 1970 by the legendary band, The Guess Who. The Guess Who never intended for this song to become a hit, it came about and took on a life of it’s own by pure chance. Here’s the story behind the song “American Woman.” The songs origins took the form of a live jam at a curling rink concert in Waterloo, Ontario. The group was rushing into the second set and began improvising a rhythm to liven up the crowd. Burton Cummings, the lead singer, began improvising lyrics to fit the music. They liked what they had played and noticed a kid with a cassette recorder making a bootleg copy and asked him for the tape. You see, The Guess Who didn’t want anyone making bootleg copies of their song’s. The band intended to destroy the cassette tape they took from the young fan, but instead decided to listen to what he had recorded, and it’s a good thing they did! That song that the bands lead vocalist made up on the spot, would end up becoming a major hit for the band, and it would become one of the biggest hits of the rock era. The subsequent studio recording of the song, features the original almost completely unchanged; only a few lines were added. And that’s how this song was born, all thanks’ to a young fan who was bootlegging their show. Now from 1999, here’s Lenny Kravitz with his version of that song, a hit that peaked at #19 back in November of 99, “American Woman.” https://youtube/watch?v=UzWHE32IxUc
