#16: Only Lovers Left Alive The 21st century vampire genre has been mired by so many faux-slick action pictures and nauseatingly bad romantic fantasies, that sometimes its difficult to remember that there CAN be good entries in this genre. Jim Jarmuschs Only Lovers Left Alive is not only proof of that but stands for me as the best vampire movie since the original Let The Right One In in 2007. That is because this film doesnt play up the erotic aspects of vampires but focuses on the depression of immortality: lounging away in the shadows of a modern world and simply waiting for the end to come and take you. Both the script and the inventive direction from Jarmusch certainly sells this and offers a highly compelling character study of suicidal artists who just happen to be vampires. Outside of the technical aspects, the performances are all top-notch as well. Tilda Swinton delivers my second favorite lead actress performance this year (only just behind Scarlett Johansson in Under The Skin) as a vampiress desperately trying to hold on to the joys and passions of her past. Tom Hiddleston, who I do love as Loki in the Marvel franchise, delivers a career-peak performance as Tilda Swintons romantic partner: a depressed rock musician who views most humans as walking zombies. The relationship between those two is the crux of the film, and was one of the most believable and interesting romances Ive seen in a while. Whats there really more to say: if youve been waiting for a good vampire movie that doesnt sparkle, this is the one for you.
