#18, October 14. The Blair Witch Project, 1999. If there has ever been a loved it/hated it/no in between movie, this is it. I dont get the hate, I loved it. Maybe because I like to hike; maybe because the mood struck a nerve; or maybe for the simple fact it was released on my 21st birthday. I dont know, but whatever it is the movie gives me the creeps. In 1994, three film students go deep into the Maryland woods to film a documentary of a local legend and never return. Their footage is found a year later and when pieced together, the people who found it (and we) see their horrible fate. The hordes of found footage horror films of recent years undoubtedly sprung from this movies success though, contrary to some beliefs, it is not the first (or even the best) of its kind. Cannibal Holocaust predates this movie by 19 years and will appear on this list eventually. I dug the shocking ending, documentary style and the behind the scenes trivia of how the actors were given notes in their packs and just go with it. But mostly I love how you dont see the villain. AFI did a heroes and villains list once and said a teaser that the only villain you never see was coming up. I was hoping for the Blair witch from this movie but it ended up being man from Bambi. I dont get that but the hook to this movie is it felt real. The characters even go by the names of the actors who play them and were all unknown. It is a simple movie but sometimes that is all it takes. https://youtube/watch?v=D51QgOHrCj0
