SUMMER CAMP- SPECIAL COACHING FOR SLOW LEARNERS & HOLIDAY SPECIAL PROGRAMME AND PICNIC INTRODUCTION: In the year 2013, summer holiday special programme was very special for our children in Pudupunal an Puduvasanthem. During this summer holidays our home children were provided opportunities for having different experience and get enriched. Different time table was followed during the holidays and different programmmes were carried out at regular interval aiming at developing the curricular and extra-curricular talents of the children. Summer Camp was organized for five days from 13th May 2013 to 17th May 2013 at Pudupunal and 30st April to 4th May 2013 at PuduIrudhayam orphanage. Totall 80 children took part in this summer camp. Special coaching class in English, cooking practice, training in sports and games, sessions on spirituality development and dance practices etc were part of the training programmes. This year trekking also was organized for the children and it gave them a new experience. Resource persons were arranged for the training programme. Different tours and picnics were organized for the home children and they were taken to many historical, pilgrimage and picnics places. Overall this summer holiday was purposefully utilized by our home children due to the good planning of our Executive Director Bro.I.Sebastian M.A. M.B.A. Children were very happy these days and thanked brother for organizing such wonderful picnic and useful training programme. Herewith we give you a short report on the various activities that were carried out during the training programmes. Happy News about our children’s brilliant success in the 10th Public Exam and other class annual Examination:To test the high level students Tamil Nadu Government conduct public examination every year for the 10th grade students and promote them to the higher secondary school. In the year 2013 110000 students wrote examination and 89 % of them passed in the examination. All our children wrote their annual 10th Public examination in the month of April 2013. From our orphanages 27 children wrote their 10th Examination and 24 children passed in their examination. Purpose of organizing summer camp:The aim of the summer camp is to help the children to improve their curricular and extra-curricular talents and at the same time and equip them with needed inputs, information and skills. Through this camp also we aim to analyse each individual child’s capacity in academic and non-academic activities. It helps us to find out weak students so that we could show good attention towards them. The summer holidays also used purposefully and children are provided opportunities to improve their skills and talents. Main purpose of the summer camp- special coaching: 1. To speak Tamil and English language fluently 2. To read Tamil and English language fluently 3. To write Tamil and English language fluently 4. To increase the thinking capacity 5. To understand the importance of the Tamil and English 6. To improve the knowledge 7. To developing the creativity skills 8. To learn the lessons through games 9. To learn to live on their own. 10. To learn to have good interest for prayer life. 11. To be environmental friendly. 12. To show love and care for the livestock that are reared in our home. Activities Carried Out During the Summer Camp: Five Days Training:Our home children were given five days of training in different aspects like reading, sports and games, skill development, cooking etc during the summer holidays. All our home children participated in this training programme and improved their skills and talents. Teaching of Tamil Lessons and Tamil lessons to the children. Date: From 13 .05.2013 to 17th May 2013 at Pudupunal and 30th April 2013 to 4th May 2013 at Pudu Irudhayam. Venue: Pudupunal children’s home and PuduIrudhayam. Resource Person: Joselin Teacher, Devi Bala, Shunmugavalli, Malika, Anusia, Ravathi and Marthal. Each group of children gathered ‘at Pudupunal children home and PuduIrudhaym at 9.30 am. The respective teachers were introduced to the children to teach the lessons. They divided children into 5 group level. Teaching of Tamil and English lessons were initiated in the first session. This first session was started with a special prayer followed by Tamil hymns. Children were very happy and active to learn Tamil and English lessons. Teachers took lessons on vowels and Tamil & English Alphabet letters and fundamental pronunciation in Tamil and English language. Individual attention was paid to read and write the Tamil and English letters. Teachers took the first session up to 11.00 am and gave break for half an hour to the children. Second session was started at 11.30 and ended at 1.00 pm. Teachers taught Tamil and English major pronunciation letters 216. All the children learnt to read and write these letters with more interest. From 1.00 pm to 2.00 pm was the lunch break and all the children were provided with good vegetarian meals.Third session was started at 2.00 pm and ended at 3.00 pm. Teachers conducted small exams on the lessons taught in the morning. All the children actively participated in writing these exams. Tea break was given to the children to enjoy the refreshment at 3.00 to 3.30 pm. From 3.30 pm to 4.30 pm teachers corrected exams papers of the children and gave marks. Teachers presented prizes to the best children who scored more marks. Teachers showed more concern and attention on the weaker children.Teachers taught the lessons through News paper reading. Teachers taught consonant to the children through reading of News paper. Children took efforts to find out the consonant from the News papers and succeeded in it. Dr. I. Sebastian FSC conducted an evaluation on this summer camp. He appreciated and thanked the teachers for their dedicated services to our children. During the evaluation time teachers came submitted a positive report about the orphan to Dr. I. Sebastian FSC. They really appreciate the children’s performance and improvement in their education. We are proud to see our children are growing well with good mind and knowledge. We are very happy that we are making a big difference in the lives the children those who are under our care. We create an opportunity to the children to learn and grow as child. As you can see we are taking lot efforts to create an atmosphere and plat form for our children to lead a better life. Reading Training: Training in reading was organised so as to improve the reading skill of the children. Small children were trained to know the alphabets of Tamil and English letters. Ms. Joselin handled coaching class for the high school children. She coached the children in reading English words. First the children were taught vowels. Children were asked to write ten each letters starting with English vowels a, e, i, o, u. First they wrote the letters in their working notebook and then they were made to write those words on the board. After writing the words they were asked to read louder and the meaning of the word was explained to the children. Besides this many new vocabularies were taught to children and they were advised to use them in their regular day today activities. Library:During the training programme children were also distributed with different library books so as to improve their general knowledge. Every day separate time was spared for reading books. Different life sketches of predominant leaders were provided to children. Moral story books, historical books, different articles etc were provided to the children to improve their reading skills. This training has helped the children to develop their reading skill and they started to show interest in reading different books. Sports and Games: Children were also given training in sports and games. Small children were given training in running race and frog race and the grown up children were given training in skipping, one leg race, running race etc. Children were helped to know method of starting a race and ending it. Skill Development Trainings: So as to develop the inherited and acquired skills of the children they were also given training in singing, dancing, drawing, essay writing and trekking. Children were also trained to improve their skills in Kolattam, Silampattam, Thappattam, bamboo Stick dance and folk dance. Children were taken to nearby small hill for trekking. Trekking was new experience for our home children and they were excited over this experience. Spirituality Development: Spirituality development also was part of the training. During the training children were provided time for prayer life. Mr. Babu was the resource person for this session. Children were motivated with Bible and many other moral stories. Children were facilitated to do meditation every day. Different hymns were taught to the children during the session. They were informed about the importance of prayer in our day to day living. They were made to realise that prayer is their strength. Livestock: Children were also given training in taking care of the livestock that are reared in our home. Different birds like love birds, dove, chickens etc are brought up in our home and the children were trained to show good concern for the animals. The aim for this motivation is to make the children to be passionate with the livestock and at the same time be environmental friendly. Cooking: Children were divided into different groups and they were asked to prepare food as per their choice. This helped the children to learn cooking also during the training. Our home children prepared different foods and served the other children. It gave them good experience and many of our home children are capable of preparing food. Outcome of the Special summer coaching: 1 Children’s reading skill improved. 2 Children improved their knowledge of English. 3 Children learnt to pronounce English words correctly. 4 Children learnt to spell the name correctly. 5 Children have learnt to cook. 6 Children’s interest for reading books increased and they show interest for reading books. 7 Children’s handwriting is improved. 8 Children have learned to take care of the livestock and they have started to behave environmental friendly. 9 Children started to spend time in prayer 10 Children’s skills in cultural and sports activities have improved. Summer Holiday time table: During the summer holidays, a special holiday time table was prepared and followed under the guidance of Bro. I. Sebastian FSC. Time table included all the interesting activities like dance practice, drum beating, gardening, rearing animals like pig and turkeys, kolattam and kummbi. MS. Devi Bala, MS.Shunmugavalli and MS. Joselin were the resource persons to give them practice. Our senior children also took responsibility to give more practice to the other junior children. Children enjoyed this summer holidays by learning many things. They found very useful to develop their skills. Time Activities: 6.15 am Wake up and prayer 6.15 am to 8.15 am Cleaning, gardening, animals rearing 8.15 am to 8.45 am Bathing 8.45 am to 9.45 am Breakfast 9.45am to 10.45 am Dance practice 10.45am to 11.00 am Break 11.00am to 12.30 am Reading books 12.30 to 1.00pm Washing 1.00pm to 2.00pm Lunch 4.00pm to 5.30pm Gardening 5.30pm to 6.00pm Washing 6.00pm to 7.00pm Games 7.00pm to 8.00pm Drum beating practice, Kolattam, Kummi practice Summer Tour programme for our children: Summer tour was organized for our home children in the month of May 2013. This tour was organized so as to give opportunity for the children to visit and know about the historical places in our state Tamilnadu and at the same time give relaxation for the children from their routine life. Children were also provided opportunities to learn cooking and many other aspects during the tour programme and this has helped the children to improve their self confidence and self dependant nature. It was 8 days tour programme and many historical and tourists’ places were visited during the tour. Here below we give you the details of the places visited. No Date Place 1. 05.05.2013 Thisaiyanvilai-2. 06.05.2013 Nagercoil-3. 07.05.2013 Kanyakumari, Susintharam Temple and Padmanathapuram Palace-4. 08.05.2013 Thiruchendur-5. 09.05.2013 Karaikal-6. 12.05.2013 Thiruchendur 7. 19.05.2013 Pondichery-8. 27.05.2013 Veilankanni Shrine Children were very happy during the tour and they enjoyed the programme very thoroughly. They were refreshed and were ready to start their routine life. Tour programme to Kanyakumari: The summer tour programme started on 5th May 2013 and the children were taken to Thisaiyanvilai and there they visited temples and the second day children were brought to Nagercoil and halted. On the next day children were taken to Kanyakumari, Susintharam Temple and Padmanthapuram palace all of which are world famous tourists’ spots. Kanyakumari is one of the picnic spots in the world and it is visited by lakhs of the people every year. Thousands of people come to place everyday. It is the place where the three Oceans (Arabic Ocean, Bay of Bengal and Indian Ocean) join. The sunrise and sunset in this ocean is very spectacular to watch. Our children were very happy to enjoy on the sea shore and they played different games on the shore. They also visited Gandhi Mandapam which is a museum. In the museum they had chance to know about different information about Gandhi who is our National Father. Children also were taken to Vivekanantha Rock by boat. Children had very wonderful time on the sea shore. Earlier children also watched the spectacular site of sun rise. After visiting Kanyakumari children were taken to Susintharam Temple which is one of the very famous Temples in Asia. Children were very happy to see the wonderful sculptures in the temple. The sculptures and the statues of the deities in the Temple were made very beautifully and the children were astonished to watch the statues and artistic sculptures. There are different statues of deities which are made in one stone. The astonishing site in this Temple is the stone statue from which music arises. All our home children knocked the statue and were admired to hear the music from it. After visiting Susintharam Temple our children were taken to Padmanathapuram Palace. It is one of the world famous Palaces and it is maintained very beautifully till today. The meetings halls, dining rooms and the entertainment hall etc wonderful site to watch. In the dining hall more than thousand people can sit at a time and have food. Every room and every wall in the Palace are decorated with beautiful paintings depicting the life style of the people of the century. It is one of the treasures that depict the culture of our nation. After visiting all these places children were brought back to Nagercoil to take rest. In the evening children were taken for shopping and they were allowed to purchase their needed items. Children were very happy to purchase different bangles, ear rings, toys, necklace, dresses and play materials. After that children had good supper and went to rest. During the day children were provided with different sweets and good food. Tour programme to Thiruchendur Temple:On the next day our children were taken to Thiruchendur Temple. It is another famous pilgrimage spot in our state. Every day more than thousands of people visit this temple. This is a Temple of God Murugan who is worshipped by majority of the people of the state. This temple is situated on the sea shore. Our children visited the temple and spend the whole day on the sea shore playing different games and taking bath. Grown up children helped the small children to have bath in the sea. All our children spend the time in swimming. In between children were provided with good snacks like Samosa, Vada, Murukku etc. brother also organized different sports competitions for the children. Running competition was held for the children. Children were divided on the basis of age for the competition. Brother provided chocolates for the winning children. Children also enjoyed swinging which is made like boat. In the evening children were brought back to our home. Children had very good time at Thiruchendur and they spend the whole day on the sea shore. On the way back to Kanyakumari children had a chance to see the Devesahayampillai’s church near Kavalkinaru. Tour programme to Veilankanni: After few days of gap our children were taken to Veilankanni on 27th May 2013 so as to visit the Shrine of Our Lady of Health and to get the blessing of Mother Mary for doing well in studies in the coming academic year. The tour was started with prayer song and after that children were dancing and enjoying in the bus. After reaching the Shrine our children took part in the Holy Mass and then they were taken to sea shore. On the sea shore children were divided into different groups. Fish, crab etc were purchased and they were equally shared among the groups. Children were asked to prepare their food. Our children made temporary oven on the sea shore as groups and they prepared their lunch. It was a new experience for our home children as it was a first time our children prepared food for themselves. Children were excited through this experience. Our children also prepared very good meals on this day. After lunch children spend the time in playing games and then in the evening children were sent for shopping. They purchased many ornaments for themselves. In the late evening children were brought back to our home. Children had very exciting and interesting time at Veilankanni Shrine. Conclusion: Throughout the camp and picnic brother was present with the children and he was giving suggestions and ideas for bettering each sessions. It was his idea to make the children to prepare food during the picnic which gave exciting experience for the children. The idea with which he planned this summer camp and summer tour programme has been achieved with the full support of the home staff and cooperation of the home children. Children really enjoyed the camp and tour and they had good relaxation. With this new energy they are ready to start their school studies. All the children are expecting next summer holiday to have many more new experience. Brother also has promised the children many exciting experience next year. Brother thanked the staff, resource persons and children for making this summer camp and tour successful.
