1848. Former Michigan territorial governor Lewis Cass is the Democratic Presidential candidate, and Abraham Lincoln is in the rival Whig Party. Lincoln is attributed with the first known use of the word “Michigander” when he accuses the Democrats of “dovetailing onto the great Michigander” and then “tying him to a military tail.” The Cass nomination causes a split in the Democratic party, leading many anti-slavery Democrats to join the Free Soil Party.
