1983. When Bowies album Lets Dance was released, I was only 12 years old, so I can be forgiven for my ignorance about a few things. 1) the liner notes on the album indicated that China Girl was co-written by Bowie and Iggy Pop, but I didnt yet know who Iggy was. Or that his own version of the song had appeared on the album The Idiot in 1977. 2) the china girl of the title may refer to a Vietnamese woman named Kuelan Nguyen that Pop had taken a liking to. Or it may refer to China White heroin. 3) the oriental guitar riff at the start of the Bowie version was producer Nile Rogers contribution. 4) the guitar solo was played by Stevie Ray Vaughan, who I would soon know for his songs Cold Shot and Couldnt Stand The Weather.
