1995s White Dwarf was panned by the critics and canceled as a television series before it went beyond a two-hour pilot movie, but it deserves a look as a true cult favorite. Executive produced by Francis Ford Coppola and Carlos Casteneda influenced writer Bruce Wagner who had just come off producing the TV miniseries Wild Palms with Oliver Stone, it had pedigree. Watching it then and watching it now, twenty years later, it still beguiles, a sci-fi steampunk mixing of Northern Exposure fish out of water culture shock with Dune-like David Lynch production and Game of Thrones anticipating imagination and intrigue. While there are uneven spots, and there is a flattening of plot twists to tell the story arc in two hour allotment, while there is dated special effects that were cutting edge for 1995, the story delivers. Dr. Driscoll Rampart arrives on the remote outpost of Rusta after a six week rocket ride to begin a medical internship. Compared by some to Kurosawas Red Beard... I recommend as a personal cult favorite. #cultfave #whitedwarf #francisfordcoppola #brucewagner https://youtube/watch?v=mt90AYy8mvc DIALOGUE... [Dr. Driscoll Rampart has just arrived and been introduced to Dr. Akada, the doctor is interning under on the remote outpost of Rusta] DR. RAMPART: Not quite as miserable as I had hoped for... but I dont see that as being too much of a problem. DR. AKADA: You dont? DR. RAMPART: Huh? (pauses) Its important for me to come back with....certain... stories. DR. AKADA: Im not exactly following you.. DR. RAMPART: When I leave this.. place... Ill be starting my own private practice in New York. Now, any Park Avenue doctor worth his salt has done a little stint in the outback. O, society patients demand it. They wouldnt even consider seeing a doctor who doest have a war story or two about a certain sojourn in a remote medical armpit in.. no offense... DR. AKADA: None taken. DR. RAMPART: ..a primitive planet governed by a white dwarf star system. Well, It just seems so promising... I understand you have a dirty little war going on here? DR. AKADA: A civil war between the light and dark sides. DR. RAMPART: Really? (pauses) You see, that I can sell. #####
