2-DAY WORKING MEETING ON ACCELERATING CONTRACEPTIVE CHOICE (ACC):EXPANDING OPTIONS THROUGH EVIDENCE-BASED ADVOCACY AT THE SUB-NATIONAL LEVEL, ORGANIZED BY PATHFINDER INTERNATIONAL NIGERIA IN COLLABORATION WITH PLAN PARENTHOOD FEDERATION OF NIGERIA (PPFN) AND ADVANCE FAMILY PLANNING (AFP) Report by Wale Jimoh, Project Manager, CHIEFNGO VENUE: Bolton white hotel, Abuja. DATE: 20th - 22nd Jan, 2015 The working meeting commenced at 9:15am with the introduction of participants. The country representative of Pathfinder Internation welcomed all the participants to the all important working meeting. He informed the participants that, the program was expected to take place in 6+1 states of the federation (Lagos, Oyo, Kwara, Kaduna, Gombe, Jigawa and the FCT). He highlighted the following; GOAL OF THE WORKING MEETING *Reflecting the goals of FP2020, the working meeting aim to increase access to high-quality family planning service in Nigeria, with an initial focus on six state and grounded in experience and evidence from implementation from other state. OBJECTIVES *Identify national and state-level needs and advocacy priorities for accelerating contraceptive choice *Develop work plans that set specific advocacy objectives aimed at influncing policy change, implementing existing policy and bringing effectibve interventions to scale, and that have a good chance of accelerating contracetive choice within six months to one year. There were specific discussions on, Contraceptive Choice in context-why does it matter, what has worked? The Nigeria experience. The expected outcome of the discussion was to have a full understanding of how an expanded methods mix supports quality service, human rights and equity in the country. Discussion on Pririoty for Acelerating Contraceptives Methods Mix, explore various family planning mettods and how best Nigeria women has make use of them. The following were the high point of the discussion; -The Nigeria FP scale up plan -Operationalizing the National Long Acting Reversible Contraceptive (LARC) strategy -The new task-shifting/task sharing policy-implications for training and -Balacing Demand and Supply-Evidence based interventions. The expected outcome of the discussion was for the initial priorities to be refined and informed the meeting and reflecting current National plans and community. BREAK-OUT SESSION Each state converged to discuss the: PRIORTY SETTING, DECISION MAKING and SETTING ObVJECTIVE. These was conducted for the rest of the day, which was expected to continue the following day. Expected outcome of the exercise; initial priorty- setting for each state, informed by resouce people, and identifiying desision makers and individuals, organizations and evidence that can be influnential in acting on the prioties indentified and SMART objectives. DAY 2 Recaps of the previous day was conducted, while the moderator allowed participants to raise their concerns. Highlight of the day discussions: -Where are the gaps in what women want and need- analysis of Demographic and Health Survey (DHS)2013 and Performance Management and Accountability (PMA)2020 data. The expected outcome was; mapping of near-term opportunities policy change, implementing existing policy and bringing eefective interventions to scale. -The Near-Teram Benefits of Family Planning in Lagos. Expected outcome discussed on how the use of the impactNOW tool that helps refine local evidence-based advocacy. The state break-out session continued. This was followed by state presentations on the pleniminary state-specific work plans. The state work-plan which was expected to continue at the state level, will be used to mobilize others, attract financial, technical and political support in each state. The meeting was brought to a close at 4:50pm with vote of thanks by the FCT reperesentative who complained on the planning of the meeting and unequall representation of the state. This was addressed by Dr. Farouk Jega, the country reperesentative of Pathfinder Internation as he thanked participants for a robbust discussion and implore the states reperesentative to continue the good work.
