2. God created our immune system to work to protect our bodies. Foreign organisms come in the form of viruses, bacteria, parasites and fungi. They are known as “microbes.” The job of your immune system is to protect your body from foreign organisms, called microbes. These can be viruses, bacteria, parasites, and fungi. Your skin is your first and foremost barrier for your body! Did you know that it also secretes an antibacterial substance? Your nose, mouth and eyes are also obvious entry points for germs. Tears and mucus contain an enzyme (lysozyme) that breaks down the cell wall of many bacteria. Stomach and Intestines: Each day you also eat hundreds of germs, and again most of these die in the saliva or the acid of the stomach. Saliva is also anti-bacterial. Intestines are lined with even more mucus membranes to trap microbes. Nose and Lungs. Since the nasal passage and lungs are coated in mucus, many germs that are not killed immediately are trapped in the mucus and soon swallowed. Mast cells also line the nasal passages, throat, lungs and skin. Any bacteria or virus that wants to enter to your body must first make it past these defenses. If microbes do make it past these defenses, white blood cells tag them as invaders, engulf them, and create memory cells in case those invaders enter the body again in the future.
