(2)There is an onus on the person to protect the uniqueness of their own self. From early life many participants recognize their difference and the dawning realization that their personal attributes and sensitivities are uncommon. Being aware of ones difference can generate a life trajectory distinct from conventionally prescribed life courses resulting in ever-increasing distance between oneself, the development of peers and the expectations of the AVAILABLE world. Along with this distance is a heightened sensitivity to self-and-other interaction. One is set apart as having a different identity, in some sense a less naive one, as though something, life events, inherent sensitivities, caused one to grow up too fast, see too much, loose an innocent belief in the taken-for-granted presentation of things. Sensing this, such individuals compare themselves to others in an attempt to assess their own belonging.
