20 injured as 5.5 magnitude earthquake rocks Rukum KATHMANDU, JUN 28 - An earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale struck Rukum district at around 5.25 PM on Friday evening, sending tremors across the nation. According to National Seismological Centre official, Dilli Ram Tiwary, the epicenter of the quake was at the South Western part of the district. Tremors were felt in the adjoining regions of Rukum including Surkhet and other 15 districts. Mild tremors were also felt in the capital. It has been confirmed that over a dozen houses in the district have suffered cracks following the tremor. More than 20 people have sustained minor injuries in the stampede after panic set in after the quake. Besides Rukum , districts like Salyan, Surkhet, Jajarkot, Rolpa and Dang witnessed major tremors. Locals of Rukum have been terrified as majority of the VDCs in the district felt the tremor. Police informed that many locals have not returned to their houses yet fearing reoccurrence of the quake. People had gathered at the open public spaces after the tremor rocked Rukum . The exact details of the quake and looses incurred are yet to be known. Police, however, said that no any untoward incidents have been recorded after the quake.
